Our New Name
The Journey from Urban Homeworks to Housing in Action!
In 2023, Housing in Action began a journey of articulating a new mission and vision that communicated housing as an essential component of justice. From that process came our mission to lead the fight for housing justice so that all people have a safe, stable, and dignified place to live, with a vision of housing justice for all.
With these essential statements establishing the core of our purpose, we recognized the need for a new name that spoke to our mission and vision and merged our purpose with the strength and momentum of this organization. And so, in our 30th year of operation, we changed our name from Urban Homeworks to Housing in Action (HIA)!
We are not about sitting on the sidelines. We are about doing the work and organizing the resources, relationships, and power necessary to carry out our vision. Housing in Action is an iterative strategy where the neighbors benefiting from dignified rentals and homeownership inform policy, that policy is implemented through and in support of rental and homeownership programs, and the process continues as we build a more dignified, just community for all.
Those who have known our organization for a long time will see the familiar threads of actively building homes and strengthening community toward a just future for all. Those new to us will find an organization calling them into active participation in the solution. And those looking for an organization that asks more of our community and stakeholders will find it in Housing in Action.
HIA is rooted in history and pointed toward progress
As we brainstormed a new symbol, it was important to us to acknowledge our past and speak to our future. For as long as we can remember, our organization’s logo has been a triangle. We’ve designed our new logo recognizing that history as important AND recognizing that the way we have evolved as an organization has become more beautiful, dynamic, and active over time.
HIA means shelter and protection
The position of our logo above our name highlights our role in building places of shelter and protection through affordable, dignified apartments and homes for purchase. It also highlights that when our community of residents come together, they also shelter and protect each other. Stable, affordable homes are so important, but the stable, strong, and vocal communities that grow from stable homes is, and will always be, our ultimate goal.
HIA requires a diverse community to succeed
When HIA was founded 30 years ago, it was through the efforts of a small group of caring pastors and church members as an expression of their faith. As HIA has grown, we recognize that we need people from all walks of life to come together around the shared belief that housing is a human right. Our new logo is an expression of our belief that Housing in Action is a diverse community in action.
