Homeownership Pathways
The racial homeownership gap has a direct effect on BIPOC communities, impacting wealth and future economic opportunities. Because many BIPOC households are first-time and first-generation homebuyers, they also often do not have the advice, support, or financial safety net that many white homebuyers have.
Stable homes for neighbors to build foundations
Homeownership Pathways is our answer to the many Housing in Action residents who came to our team and shared they needed a central resource to help guide and encourage them on their path to homeownership. Our Homeownership Pathways programs gives residents a certified support person to help them understand which homeownership option is best for their family and financial goals, walking with them through pre-purchase, purchase, and post-purchase.
Our program aims to build opportunities for HIA residents and fellow Northsiders to achieve their homeownership goals, whether that be purchasing a home, securing downpayment assistance, better understanding the process, or improving their credit score. Complementing our other initiatives to advance homeownership opportunities for aspiring homeowners, Homeownership Pathways creates a resource that connects residents to opportunities both inside and outside Housing in Action.
Repairing egregious homeownership disparities
In partnership with our Homeownership Pathways program is our Homeownership Access Fund! The Homeownership Access Fund serves current or past North Minneapolis residents seeking to purchase a home in North Minneapolis for the first time by providing up to $20,000 in a down payment assistance grant. Fully funded through individual and foundation dollars, our down payment assistance is flexible with few restrictions—funds may be used for down payments or closing costs, on varied types of homes (single-family, townhome, coop, etc.), with any mortgage lender, with conventional or FHA loans, and in combination with other forms of financial or down payment assistance.
A stable, affordable home grants me the gifts of security, belonging, and empowerment. It creates a sense of community and lays the groundwork for my family's dreams and aspirations. It means I can raise my children in a safe environment, filled with love and opportunity. I envision a space where my loved ones can thrive, where we can gather, dream, and grow together. Having this home allows me to plant roots and contribute to a neighborhood where everyone works toward their betterment. It’s about creating a legacy, not just for my family, but for our community as a whole.
